Trumpism's most telling and defining instances β not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing β emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of multiple weeks, the US president began displaying everyone his designs for a lavish reception room two times larger compared to the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to erect it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse β the existing assessment of casualties from his cuts to USAID stands at 600,000 and increasing, and presently a study forecast his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted β genuinely, no previous leader would have contemplated β independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom maintain dealings with the government.
We moved from 'the humble will receive the planet' to 'the humble will perish of cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the president try to upend the traditional concept of democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves β in older age cohorts close to half β who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we grew up with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they transformed an image of affection into a figure of hate who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this change developed more slowly, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or nones. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; however I believe that there are pearls of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is emphatically definitely not the account of a powerful ruler emerging; instead, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to avoid undercover officers. The infant develops in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his doctrine is about love for others, especially for the disadvantaged β not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the additional cheek β not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a way to educate the aggressor; his method regarding offenses is that if a person pilfers your coat you must offer the person your additional clothing too.
The apparent and direct fact that the Savior from scripture advocates for a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but due to its natural unconventionality requiring to be contained. During the 1950s it was controlled via weakening β Protestantism was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Best Within Us
Hence I have become encouraged to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to assist in constructing the initiative that has protested openly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired voters to turn out in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities in US history.
We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you receive him and receive them or refuse?
The nation is most protected, in other words, by reference to the best in US heritage, just as Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to what makes it special and magnificent, specifically the model of the Savior. In neither case does it mean acting as if the most negative about the nation and Christianity never occurred; it represents both modesty and conviction, a combination that genuine national faithful ought to accept.
